Historytop

Thai is an internationally famous cuisine. Thai in Americais basically a hybrid of old Eastern and Western influences mixed together intoits own unique feast. Originally thai food was primarily aquatic i.e. fish, plant, and herbs from the sea. However, because of their Buddhist backgrounds Thai food was not originally enjoyed with large chunks of meat as it is in the United States. Apparently in the 17th century culinary influences from Dutch, Portuguese, French, and Japanese inspired a more meaty Western style into the food.

Thais were very open to new approaches andrecipes. In the 1600’s the chili was introduced into Thai cooking bymissionaries who acquired them while serving in South America. Also, with theintroduction of coconut milk and oil Thai food was starting to form into what it is today.

Curries made up of many pure spices were toned down with fresh herbs such as lemon grass and galangal. One unique aspect of Thai curries is that they burn fierce but only for a minute while other curries burn for longer durations. The Thai cooking style is one that brings a harmony of tastes and textures to the palate.

Thai food is unfortunately something that I must enjoy while dining out. Although there are ample asian grocery stores in the area I am not a chef. It does not taste as good home-cooked as your more conventional American food. So anyway here are some of my favorate spots around town. Check them out. You will not be disappointed!
